Easy Apple Crisp Recipe

Here’s a delicious treat for a cool afternoon – this plate of apple crisp will warm you right up. Doesn’t this look tasty? It’s perfect for a mid-afternoon snack with a cup of tea.

And when it’s cold outside and we’re hungry, this Apple Crisp gives us an excuse to take a needed break and come inside for awhile.

This recipe calls for a lot of sugar. Adapt it to your own tastes or even use homegrown stevia instead of some or all the sugar. Read here about how I grew my own Stevia to use instead of sugar.

We planted fruit trees years ago when we moved here. Now every year, I can make about 4 of these Apple Crisps from our very own apples!

How To Make Easy Apple Crisp

  • Wash and peel all of the apples.

  • Then slice them right into a greased 9 x 13″ pan. How thin or thick you make your slices is totally up to you.
  • Sprinkle the white sugar and the cinnamon on top – make sure you get it to cover all of the apples completely. Then set the apples aside for now.

How to Make a Topping for Apple Crisp

  • Soften the butter and cream it with the brown sugar. Add the flour, oats and salt and mix well to blend.
  • Spoon the oats mixture over the entire top – try to cover all of the apples with this top coating. Bake at 375 for 40 – 45 minutes.
  • Let it cool but enjoy a dish full while it is still warm in the pan. Apple Crisp is such comfort food for us.

FAQ

How do I choose the best apples?

  • Feel your apple and ensure that it’s nice and firm. The apple shouldn’t have bruised or soft spots.
  • Any obvious rotting or bruising is a bad sign, but most apples will have some natural scuffs or markings.
  • Ensure that your apple has a nice filled-in color, which indicates maturity and great exposure to sunlight.
  • Smell your apple; pleasant aroma is a sign of a good apple, though some will smell stronger than others.

Can I use more than one kind of apple for this easy apple crisp?

  • Absolutely! Using more than one kind of apple is a great way to create subtle variety of flavor and texture.
  • Some apples that are particularly good for baking are Braeburn, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Gala, Winesap, Golden Delicious, and Fuji, but almost any apple would be delicious in this dessert.

What’s the best way to store apple crisp?

  • Apple crisp can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Either of these options will give you 3 to 4 days to eat the dessert, though it’s typically best in the first day or two.
  • Storing in the fridge may also increase the amount of time your apple crisp will keep!
  • To prevent the top from getting soggy, cover just the apple filling with plastic. If you also cover the top, it will trap in moisture, which will lead to a soggy crisp.

Variations and Serving Suggestions

  • Top with some vanilla ice cream for added sweetness and a great balance between warm and cold.
  • Drizzle the surface of your apple crisp with some caramel once it’s out of the oven.
  • This recipe is great because it’s so versatile! If you want to add some cranberries or raisins or even something like pears, just omit one of the apples and use about a cup of whatever extra ingredient you’d like to mix in.
  • For extra texture and crunch, you could also incorporate chopped nuts for the crisp topping. Pecans or walnuts would be particularly tasty with this dessert!
