Ingredients

  • 3 Apples (Granny Smith are a good choice)
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 2 tablespoons Cinnamon
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 3/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • A pinch of Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Cinnamon divided
  • 1/3 cup Butter melted, divided
  • 1 Egg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • Peel the apples, if you like. They are fine peeled or unpeeled.

  • Core the apples. Chop into small cubes. Apple chunks should be no smaller than 1 inch (or they will get too mushy when cooking).

  • Place apples into a large bowl.

  • Add brown sugar, lemon juice and 1 tablespoon cinnamon. Toss until apples are well-coated.

  • Pour apple mixture into an oven-safe 8 1/2 x 12-inch casserole dish.

  • In a small bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and 1 tablespoon cinnamon.

  • Add egg and about 1/2 of the butter.

  • Spread mixture evenly over top of apples.

  • Sprinkle remainder of the butter on top of the crisp.

  • Cover dish with foil.

  • Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes, or a bit more until deep golden brown and bubbling.

FAQs

What are the best apples for making apple crisp? ›

What Makes A Good Apple For Apple Crisp? The best apples for baking keep their structure under heat, which prevents the chunks of fruit from turning into mush after baking. The firm and crisp Granny Smith and Honeycrisp varieties are popular apples to use in apple pies and apple crisps.

What's the difference between apple crumble and apple crisp? ›

Like an apple crisp, an apple crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a layer of topping. But unlike the crisp, the crumble topping rarely includes oats or nuts. Instead, a crumble's topping is more like streusel, made with flour, sugar and butter.

Why is my apple crisp topping not crispy? ›

Butter, which encourages both browning and crispness, is the magic ingredient in getting your topping just right, so follow the recipe instructions. But if you feel your topping is still too dry and crumbly, (even for a crumble) add a bit more melted butter, a tablespoon at a time.

Why is my apple crisp so dry? ›

Southern Living's remedy for an overly dry crust is to add more butter to the crust. It recognizes that there are a few different methods for adding butter to the crust, but says that if your crust is frequently too dry, adding more butter before baking makes for an easy fix.

What is the sweetest and most crisp apple? ›

Fuji. Due to their low acidity, these ultra-sweet, crispy and juicy apples are a go-to choice for snacking and baking, as well as homemade baby food or apple butters.

What are the hardest crispiest apples? ›

Why is it called Brown Betty? ›

This has led some historians to believe that Betty was the name of the cook and creator of the recipe and that brown was in reference to her skin color.

Is apple brown betty the same as apple crisp? ›

Both are very similar apple desserts, but the difference mainly comes down to the crumble topping: Instead of the flour and oat mixture used in an apple crisp, an apple brown betty uses breadcrumbs for its crumbly, delicious topping.

Should I cover my apple crisp while baking? ›

Baking: Start baking the apple crisp covered with foil. This allows the apples to soften without any risk of the topping over-browning. After about 20 minutes, remove the foil and let the crisp finish cooking uncovered. Once the juices are bubbling, the topping is golden brown, and the apples are tender, it is done!

What's the difference between a crisp and a crumble? ›

So what's a crumble vs. a crisp? A crumble is just a crisp without oats in the streusel. It may feature nuts, but the streusel topping is usually a simple combination of butter, flour, and sugar that is more clumpy than that of a crisp.

Is it better to crumble with cold or melted butter? ›

The best way to achieve this is to use cold cubed butter. Using room-temperature or melted butter will cause the topping to spread out and flatten when it bakes, rather than standing pert and perky. Leaveners like baking powder and soda make baked goods light and airy—an excellent quality in cake.

Can you prep apple crisp the night before? ›

Add a little extra fresh lemon juice to help prevent the apples from turning super brown. Prepare the entire apple crisp, cover well, and refrigerate the night before baking. Don't wait any longer than overnight before baking, to prevent the apples from browning too much or drying out/spoiling.

Are Gala apples good for baking apple crisp? ›

Gala apples are my favorite variety for this recipe – I like their sweet/tart flavor and firm texture. But if you have a favorite baking apple, feel free to use it here. Granny smith apples, Honeycrisps, Jonagolds, or a mix would all be excellent.

Which apples are Crispier Fuji or Gala? ›

Texture & Use in Recipes: In terms of texture, Fuji apples are also a lot crisper, and less dense than Gala apples. So, they result in a firm bite with juicy flesh while Galas are softer and creamier. Their texture also means that Fujis are better for baking as they hold their shape better than Galas when cooked!

Are Honeycrisp apples good for baking? ›

Honeycrisp. One of the sweetest apples around, this Midwestern favorite is good for anything—including baking. It boasts a distinctive juicy crispness and is firm enough that it won't cook down much. It complements just about any other apple variety to make a stellar pie.

Are Gala apples good for baking? ›

Gala: If you want extra sweetness without the soft texture, choose Gala apples for your pie. As with Golden Delicious apples, bakers sometimes reduce the sugar in their recipes due to this variety's extra-sweet flavor.
